Nokia 6620

February 28th, 2005 - 3 Comments

Well, after much research, I decided to pick up a Nokia 6620 “smartphone”. I figured I am not smart, so my phone may as well be. Smartphones will become more commonplace soon as more and more make it to the US shores and marketplace. Basically, a smartphone is a combination mobile phone and PDA. For those of us that are “over” carrying around a Palm Pilot, but would still like to have some of the features in our cell phone, the smartphone is the answer. The 6620 is pretty cool. It is actually a little computer complete with the Symbian operating system. You can actually run Java programs on this bad boy. Everything from GPS software (combined with a GPS receiver….bluetooth anyone?) to old school Atari games like Adventure and Missle Command. Yes, I have already downloaded these to my computer and are awaiting upload to my new 6620 when it arrives. But, the biggest reason I decided on the Nokia 6620 is because it has Bluetooth built in. Bluetooth, for those of you who don’t know, is a wireless radio technology that allows devices to communicate with each other over very short distances (usually 30 feet or less). Bluetooth can be used to make your computer keyboard wireless, your phone headset wireless, or even let your phone sync your Microsoft Outlook with your computer…without wires. Bluetooth is really one of the best applications of wireless technology I have seen yet. Many new cars like the Acura TL come with Bluetooth technology built in, allowing you to get into the car with your phone in your pocket and answering a phone call with a button on the steering wheel (because the car learns of the incoming phone call via bluetooth and can interface with the phone to control call functions. It is really a slick application and it is only the beginning.

So, I picked up the Nokia 6620 for myself and the Nokia 6230 for Danielle. My phone is clearly geekier, but hers is still loaded with almost every feature the 6620 has built in. I thought about getting the same phone for the both of us, but then I realized that the car kit is a non issue. With bluetooth, there will be no car kit. All you need is a car charger to keep your battery charged, Bluetooth will do the rest.
