Spartacus PRO Wheelset Ride 1
Well, I mis-stated in another post about my new wheelset from Velocity. I purchased the Spartacus PRO wheelset which is a bit lighter than the standard Spartacus wheels. I took them out for a spin this morning for the first time after I put them together with some Continental Grand Prix tires and ultra-light tubes last night. The wheels are very nice. They are noticably lighter and more responsive. The tires are 23c, so that may be a reason why I feel like they are more responsive.
As I said before, the wheels are 20 spokes up front and 24 in the rear on Deep-V rims. There was some minor settling in the rear on the first few cranks, but after that they were whisper quiet. I really don’t know how these wheels sell for $200 a pair right now, and I even thought of picking up another pair to have as spares.
More important was that this was the first ride of my new training regimen. I wanted to start this a couple of weeks ago, but I busted a spoke and it has taken me this long to order, receive and mount the new wheels. I am going to keep it slow for a couple of weeks while I get some miles on my legs. I rode 22 miles today (chump mileage), and my legs were pretty sluggish on the way out of Marin. I will be tracking my progress after each ride here.

Hi Jason
Where did you find your Velocity wheels?
I am looking for a pair and have not been
able to find any below 270. Thanks

Alan, I got mine at http://www.spinlitecycling.com/ . They were having a sale at the time and that was part of the reason why I bought them…that and the fact that it said they were made for the “big man.” Looks like they don’t have them for the deal I got them at.

I just bought a pair of these from Superspokes.com . I called them direct. Got the wheel set for 289.00. And 2 Contential 4000 tires for $70.00 for the set. He threw in 3 tubes at no charge. I Think I got a pretty good deal call them and ask for Gregory.

Jason, I too am a big man and am looking for some good road wheels. Just wondering if you would still recommend the Spartacus Pro’s from velocity? Thank you, Danny Lynn

Sean , just wondering how you liked the Spartacus Pro wheelset. As a large man, Jason’s comments interested me but I am having problems finding reviews for these wheels. Could you let me know how you like yours? Thanks Danny

Danny, they are a really good buy I think. I got a great deal on them and they have held up very well with only one “major” wheel off tune up by me in over 1k miles. The only thing I would recommend is that you stick with Dura Ace brake pads with these. I swapped out my pads with some others that were rated for wet and dry use (tends to get a bit wet here at times in SF), but they were terrible and they made some terrible squeaking. The Dura Ace pads work better under all conditions and don’t make any noise in conjunction with the wheelset.
