Using the Audiovox 5600 as a Modem Via USB Cable

I am putting together some information I found on the web about using an Audivox SMT 5600 as a modem via a USB cable. Plugging the supplied USB data cable into the phone and to a Windows XP machine does not, by default, show the phone as a modem. Here is how to set it up to do so:

Using Modem Link you can use your phone as an external modem for another device (e.g. PDA or computer). Modem Link allows you to use a USB connection.

Set up a USB modem connection

  1. Make sure that your phone is not connected to another computer or device (e.g. PDA)
  2. On the Home Screen, select Programs, select More, select More again, select Accessories, and then press Action
  3. Select Modem Link and press Action
  4. Under Connection, select USB by pressing the right or left directional keypad outside of the Action button
  5. Press Menu, select Activate and then press Action

Note: Do NOT press Done on the left soft menu key. Pressing Done will deactivate the current connection.

Download and Install Drivers

The Audiovox 5600 Wireless USB Modem Driver for your computer. NOTE: Download and install this driver at your own risk. I have not tested it nor do I make any warranty that it will work, not work or blow up your computer or phone.

  1. Connect your Audiovox 5600to the computer via the USB cable.
  2. Upon connecting the Audiovox 5600 to your computer, the computer will prompt you for Audiovox 5600 Wireless USB Modem driver with a ‘New Hardware Wizard’. See Step 3 below for further instructions NOTE: If an ActiveSync session initiates during this process you should shut down the ActiveSync session and verify that your Modem Link session is still active (as described in Step 1 above). It is advisable that you disable the activesync features while using the phone as a modem.
  3. Download and install the driver. After installing the modem, disconnect your handset from the computer, re-activate the USB modem in your handset and reconnect it to the computer. Smartphone 2002 Wireless USB Modem or similar should now be properly listed in the Device Manager window.

Query the Modem

A modem query is necessary to establish a PC and modem connection. Note: If the PC and modem connection is not established in approximately 30 seconds, ActiveSync will take over the USB port.

  1. Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manger > Modems
  2. Double click on “Smartphone 2002 Wireless USB Modem”
  3. Select the “Diagnostics” tab and click on “Query Modem”.

The PC sends AT commands and if the modem replies back without an error then the modem is properly installed.

Add an Initialization String

Add an extra initialization string to Modem Properties. Change the APN as needed. An extra initialization string is needed on your 5600 phone for setting up the GPRS server configuration. Please contact your wireless service provider for the APN name, username and password.

  1. After querying the modem (from Step 4 above), click the “Advanced” tab in the Modem Properties dialog box.
  2. Type in your initialization string and change the APN name as needed.
  3. For T-Mobile initialization string try the following: at+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”internet2.voicestream.com”
  4. For Cingular initialization string try the following:
    AT+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”wap.cingular”,”",0,0
    username- WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
    password- CINGULAR1

Use 5600 Wireless USB Modem for Cable GPRS

  1. Activate USB modem on handset (unless already active). Connect USB data cable to handset and PC (unless already connected).
  2. Establish PC and modem connection (modem query or hyper terminal AT commands)
  3. Add dial-up connection using wireless USB modem
To Add new connection Dial-up Connections :
  1. From Control Panel select Network and Dial-up Connection
  2. Double click Make New Connection then Next
  3. Select Dial-up to Internet then Next t radio button
  4. From Internet Connection Wizard select radio button Internet Connection Manually then Next
  5. Select radio button connect through phone line and modem
  6. From modem selection, scroll down to Smartphone 2002 Wireless USB Modem then Next
  7. Under Telephone Number space type *99# and uncheck area codes and dialing rules then Next
  8. Fill in user name and password as needed
  9. Type connection name (ie Smartphone USB Cable GPRS) and next
  10. Select No then Next
  11. Unselect the “To connect to the internet immediately” option.
  12. Click Finish

Now you will want to ensure that the Smartphone 2002 USB Wireless Modem is selected and hardware features are properly configured before dialing:

To double check settings:

  1. Open the newly created dial-up connection
  2. Click on Properties, verify Smartphone 2002 USB Wireless Modem is selected
  3. Click Configure and ensure all Hardware Feature is selected as shown below. Make sure that the maximum speed is set for 115,200 bps.
  4. Click Ok then Ok
  5. Click Dial.
  6. After clicking Dial you should see Opening – Dialing – Verifying User Name and Password — Registering your computer on the Network. Once Dial up Dialog window shrinks down to your icon tray then you are GPRS connected.

Turning Off the Modem Connection

  1. While in Modem Link menu item, press Menu, select Deactivate and then press Action.

Let me know if you have any modifications.

    Jason,

I’m glad I found this info. I have tried to follow these steps but at Step 3, XP does not recognize any of the files in the downloaded zip file as drivers for the detected “USB Device”. Any suggestions?

  2. Alberto Says:

Please can you tell me How to install the driver? There is no installer on the zip.

  3. admin Says:

Hmmm, I will have to look into that Ian. Sorry.

Alberto, you should be prompted to run through the Device Installation Wizard, which will ask you if you have the drivers. There is no installer.

  4. Alan Says:

I have the same problem when i pick the driver from the Device Installation Wizard it just tells me that the driver cannot be installed.

  5. Boron Says:

Great instructions! for cingular i did not need the init string (It causes a device failure) username and password were correct. thanks and heres a link to where i found the driver that worked. peace.

  6. Mac Says:

Is there anyway to pick up a wireless internet connection on my smt 5600, like I can with my laptop? I’m not subscribing to the Cingular service for e-mail but if it has a wireless modem can’t I pick up my other services?

  7. admin Says:

Well, no you can’t. It is not really that simple. And, the wireless companies will prevent anything like that from happening. Basically, if you want to send/receive data via your mobile phone, you will need to subscribe to some kind of data plan.

  8. Mac Says:

I guess what I’m looking for is wiresess lan access for my smt 5600? any suggestions.

  9. admin Says:

Yeah, get the Media Net unlimited package. :) That is your only option Mac.

  10. Mac Says:

Sorry for the repost I didn’t update soon enough. Do you know of any third party accessories like Parrot that will allow me to use my phone and mp3 through my car speakers? I contacted a Parrot distributer and they told me the mp3 wouldn’t work through the bluetooth for some reason. I don’t understand why the Parrot systems handle data transfer and phone calls.

  11. admin Says:

Umm, I don’t know of one that will play MP3 also. I am a big fan of the Motorola IHF 1000 car kit. I have seen it in action and it works very well.

If you are looking for a mobile data solution for your car, then maybe you should consider getting yourself a Car PC and use your SMT 5600 as a wireless modem via Bluetooth. You would still need the MediaNet package though. :)

  12. Mac Says:

Check out the motorola HFW 8000. It uses the car speakers with optional accessories but it’s just the front two in mono.

    http://www.expansys-usa.com/forumthread.asp?code=HFW8000&thread=16

I guess I could always use a tape deck adapter through the audio jack and some thing different for the phone.

  13. admin Says:

Doesn’t really seem like a solution to me anyway. Why would I want to play degraded MP3 files from my phone at sub 128K bit rates? Personally, I wouldn’t want to play these files as the sound quality is going to be terrible. I am sure we will be seeing some Bluetooth enabled decks in the near future. But again, the quality of the MP3 on your phone is going to be crap, so it doesn’t seem to make sense to me. Car PCs are so cheap these days and you could do so much more, like sync it with your home media PC when you get home, automatically. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I just wanted to say thanks for posting this info. It’s interesting that the manual says section 5.4 is for the ‘modem link’ but there is no section 5.4
I used borons driver and it worked like a charm. I noticed someone said they did not need the initialization string. Is it always needed?
    Thanks
    Mike

  18. Salil Says:

I can’t seem to get the driver to install properly. When I disable ActiveSync and plug in the phone, Windows detects the phone and prompts me for the driver, but when I browse to the INF file, it says there is no information for my device there.

  19. Jason Golod Says:

Did you install the USB driver before you plug the cable and phone into the computer?

  20. Chris Says:

Excellent information. Finally, a working link to the modem driver! I got the connection working using my Infrared port, which is what I’m using now. I’m gonna go ahead and give the USB version a go now. BTW, the Cingular username/password information was INVALUABLE! Again, great information. Thanks!

  21. Byron Says:

Hey, thanks for taking the time to post this information! I was going crazy trying to get this set up, with Cingular support claiming that my phone didn’t support a modem feature. Well, finally, with thanks to you, I am able to access the internet on my laptop via my phone after 3 weeks of trying.

You are the man! “cingular i did not need the init string (It causes a device failure) username and password were correct.” ~ I experienced the same behavior, the init string is not nessasary

  27. MT Says:

    THANK YOU !!!!
It works GREAT! A couple of comments that might help your instructions:
    1) Your driver worked fine for me, but you may want to say that you have to extract the file before it will find it (not saying that is the problem some of those people had, but maybe)
    2) I had to set-up my dial-up connection by going to start-programs-accessories-communications-new connection wizard
    3) The Cingular information was GREAT but you might comment that the username and password are entered after you set up the modem (I was a little confused what to do with them when I was going through you directions until I got to the later step that required them ;)

    THANK YOU AGAIN :>

    Thanks Jason !

Great instructions, no need the init string for Cingular.

    Thanks.

  33. Tom Getty Says:

I was able to connect to the GPRS data service through Cingular at 128kbps (I live in a metro area so other places might be slower).

As stated above, the init string was not needed. The Cingular username/pw authenticated.

When I called Cingular to ask about the GPRS data charges, they advised it’s 1 cent per kilobyte ($10/meg). Seems pricey, especially the plan for $70/month unlimited data. If someone has an older plan with unlimited GPRS data then they really luck out!

On another note, someone asked if they could use the bluetooth connectivity to listen to MP3’s. When I purchased the phone, one of the disadvantages was the inability to listen to MP3’s using a bluetooth headset. This most likey means that any of the bluetooth connectivity will not work for streaming MP3’s.

  35. Jason Golod Says:

Tom, MediaNet Unlimited should not run you more than $20 a month. Not sure what ding-dong you got on the telephone, but it sounds like they were quoting you the data card package (PCMCIA card).

  36. Mike Says:

Followed the insturctons for the SMT5600 modem nad it worked like a charm. The dialup settings were a bit different for xp pro but nothing to dificult. Had to get the Driver from the site posted by Boron above.

How do I get my music from my storage card to play through my bluetooth headphones? I’ve heard that I need to format the bluetooth setting to either AVRP or A2RP or somthing like that…my bluetooth headphones only works for phone call, but not for playing music using the media player. I have the motorola bluetooth stereo headphones. My question is how do I change the settings to get the music to play through the bluetooth headphones? thanks
