US Firm Admits Oil for Food Bribe

Ok, here is something that I am really failing to understand…really failing to understand. I just read in this BBC article that the US “firm,” Midway Trading (couldn’t find a website for them) of Reston, Virginia, has admitted to $400,000 in bribes to Iraqi officials for oil purchases under the UN Oil for Food scheme. Here are the things I am failing to understand. First, what is New York District Attorney Robert Morgenthau doing on the UN IIC, the committee investigating false conduct with regards to the Oil for Food program? But, more than that, the report says that Midway Trading has agreed to pay a fine. Well, that is just great. There are thousands of American soldiers and former soldiers that have been killed in Iraq in the past year and these guys, a US company, who has helped the Iraqi government in a time when everyone including 3 year olds watching the news, knew there were full sanctions against the Iraqi government. What the hell is that all about? We send Martha Stewart (a woman who I have no love for) to jail for lying to an investigator and we are going to let a company who did business with Iraq, committed fraud and God knows what else off with a fine? This is insane. This world is getting to be completely insane.
