PubCon Vegas 2005 Update #2 - DMOZ
So, looking back at what I wrote last night at the hotel was a little harsh. I do think there are a bunch of little things that I managed to pick up at this year’s PubCon convention in addition to meeting a lot of the people we talk to and hear about on line everyday. I think Matt Cutts, from Google, was pretty forthcoming with information when he was asked a question. As someone who is striving to get good rankings in Google, I appreciated his traveling to and participating in the PubCon sessions. It would have been nice to be able to get near the guy and meet him, but that will have to wait for another time I guess. I was talking to Shoe last night and thinking back, I think one of the most profound things we learned was that Google is working to remove the DMOZ clone sites from their index. It is no secret that most SEO/SEM types covet DMOZ listings and the biggest reason is the large number of backlinks that will come from the clone sites, once your website is listed. Removing these clone sites and the value from their backlinks is surely going to have a very large impact on many sites out there. Hopefully, it will also cut down on some of the DMOZ hate that is found on just about every webmaster forum that I have been to.
I am going to use this short post format for more tidbits that I learned at the 2005 Las Vegas PubCon over the next few days.
