GPRS / EDGE Wireless Data in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Happy New Year everyone. Hope you all had a safe and fun New Year’s celebration. I am in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico right now and am writing this post via the wireless connection (via bluetooth) on my Nokia 6620 (Cingular Wireless). I have the unlimited data plan from Cingular, which has been a bit of a disappointment in the states (actual speeds have been less than what I had expected). But, it is pretty nice to be able to connect wirelessly down here without having to modify any data settings. I called Cingular’s tech support line the night before I left to make sure that there would be no additional charges for using a GPRS data connection down here and was assured by the girl on the phone, as well as by her manager, that there would not be. We will see about that.

Speeds down here are really just as good as speeds that I see in the states (in San Francisco). I just checked speeds via the DSL Reports mobile speed test and saw 28 Kbps/sec download speeds in back-to-back tests. I ran it from SFO airport and got around 32 Kbps/sec….pretty sad. I was told by the girl on the phone that their HSPDA wireless upgrade should be functional in San Francisco in the first quarter of 2006 and that they are testing it there now. I hope that is true, because I am having a tough time paying for this sub-standard data setup everymonth when Sprint/Nextel and Verizon customers are loving true high speed wireless data with their EV-DO services.

But, the good news for Cingular customers who need wireless data when in Cabo San Lucas is that Cingular’s deal with Telcel works great right out of the box. If you have the unlimited data plan, you SHOULD not be charged anything extra to use data roaming here in Mexico. Kinda nice when you are recovering from the night before in bed, watching NFL games on New Year’s Day.

    Hi Jason,

I would like to know if indeed you were not charged by Cingular for the data usage while in Mexico. We were in Pto Vallarta mid January and I have just received a very, VERY large bill @ 0.019 per kb, although I also have the MediaNet unlimited data plan with my cingular 2125 phone. They were explaining to me that the unlimited data plan does not include international coverage and that I was charged that stardard roaming rate. I would appreciate any info you were given on the reasons why the unlimited data plan would also apply in Mexico.

    Thanks,

    Kris

Sorry to comment on an old topic, but those speeds just aren’t right. I have a 6620 and I’m using Cingular (with the unlimited data plan) and I reguarly get 130 kbps/sec. You may want to check into that.
