O Negative Blood

April 13th, 2006 - 14 Comments

I have a good friend of a friend in San Diego who is looking for type O Negative blood for their 6 month-old daughter, Elle, who is undergoing surgery to fix a whole in her heart. Here is the email I just received, if you can help, please let me know or call Jorge (pronounced like George) at 619-980-2590:

Some friends of mine are in need. My friend’s, Chris & Trichelle Moxley, six month old baby,Elle, is having open heart surgery to fix a whole in her heart and she is in need of 6 donors with type O- (O-negative) blood. The blood is needed by Tuesday April 18. Let me know if you can personally donate or know someone who can. My request is that you ask others that you know as as well.

There are some pre-qualifications:
1. No tatoos or piercings within the last year.
2. No travel to Europe from 1980-96 for more than a 2 week stay.
3. No past travel to an area with malaria.
4. No known diseases
The donor would need to call the SD blood bank and say they need to make a donor specific donation for Elle Moxley.

Please call or email me if you know of anyone and I’ll make sure they are clear on the donation process (where to go, etc.) I appreciate you taking the time to check with your friends and family.

Thank you!

UPDATE: 4/2/2007
I have received a number of emails from generous people looking to give their O negative blood. I believe that the need has been satisfied, but thank you all for your concern and interest.

Hey, I wasn’t sure where to leave this comment. I downloaded and used the threecolumn layout you designed. First off- thanks for doing it- there are a lot of nice features! I did want to let you know however that it doesn’t display well in IE because of the advanced CSS. Now, as much as I hate using IE (I’m a Firefox user myself), more than 65% of my site visitors are still IE users. So I had to make a lot of tweaks to get it to display correctly… and it still isn’t 100% in IE. Just wanted to let you know.

I hope it’s OK that I commented here. (Couldn’t find a contact email or comment link under the themes section).

    Dear Jason,

My name is Sara. I just saw your comment about the little girl who needs O- blood for a surgery. I just found out today, March 30th, 2007, that this is my blood type. I don’t know when this was posted, but if they are still in need, I would be more than willing to help. I am 17 and meet the requirements. If this helps any, you can reach me at (626) 963-0816. Thank you.

I hope this kid did well with her surgery and got the blood she needed, but you know what?… if they started paying universal donors like they pay plasma donors there wouldn’t be a blood shortage and no one would ever have to ask for blood donations. That’s not cruel or cold hearted; that’s just realistic. How many people die each day because of a lack of O negative blood? Now, you can say people should just donate their blood out of the goodness of their heart, and they should, but the goal here is to save lives, not be holier-than-thou. If we got off our high horses and started paying universal donors there would be a lot less deaths, and that’s what really matters.
