BonJour Milk Frother

June 15th, 2006 - 5 Comments

Ok, so I have turned into a complete dork, but I guess a drug like caffeine will do that to you. I will be updating the Krups XP4050 review with this morning’s successes and failures, but I wanted to write about a product that amazes me everytime I use it, the Bonjour Milk Frother. They call it the BonJour Primo Latte, but I think that name is a little too light in the shorts for me…’cause I am a total bad ass. Anyway, this little bad boy makes perfect froth for cappuccinos and latte drinks in about 10 seconds. I tried to use the steam frother a bunch of times last night and this morning and a few times in conjunction with the BonJour frother to heat the froth after I whipped some up. But, in the end, the best solution is what Tito and Cameron (my in-laws) have taught me to do.

How to Use the BonJour Milk Frother

  • First, you put a small amount of *cold*, non-fat milk into a tall glass. I use a pint glass. All you need is about 100ml, about a half to three-quarters of an inch if you are using a pint glass.
  • Place the frother in the milk a little above the bottom of the glass. Froth away.
  • As the milk thickens, start to move the frother up into the froth that is being created. Depending on how much milk/cream you like vs. froth, move the frother up or down accordingly. If you leave it in the bottom, you will get all or almost all froth. If you want 50 / 50 work at the top of the milk/froth until you have to volume you think you want.
  • When you are satisfied with your froth, put the glass in the microwave for 10 to 20 seconds (trial and error here to find the temperature you like with your microwave).
  • I take off the top layer of froth and chuck it into the sink. The froth under the top is creamier. Using a spoon, hold back the froth as you tilt the glass to pour your milk/cream to the desired level and then scoop on some froth homey.

Now you are cooking with Crisco son.

does it work to put sugar or flavorings in with the milk?

Dee, I believe so. My wife likes vanilla syrup in her drinks, and the froth with the vanilla syrup is really good. Froths fine.

I use it to froth my soy milk, TJ’s plain organic works the best. However, I ALWAYS heat the milk first for about 35 seconds, that way it never bubbles over and it doesn’t compromise the foam. Works like a charm.

When I heat the milk before frothing, it does not seem to work. I just get frothy milk that deflates even BEFORE I add it to my coffee!! What am I doing wrong?

I don’t use the Bonjour anymore, I steam my milk. But, I would heat it up in the micro and then start working the milk from the bottom of the glass (I used a pint glass). When it started to thicken up, I would move it up a little until I finally had a full pint of frothed milk. I would start with about a quarter of the glass filled
