Cingular 8125 ROM Update
UPDATE 12-21-06: HTC was nice enough to redesign their website. But, true to form, the artsy web designers have no clue when it comes to usability. They are not redirecting any of the old URLs to the new ones. I have updated the link below to the download page accordingly. Happy Holidays!
Just got a little update from Deppy that there is a ROM update out for the Cingular 8125 made by HTC. The update is done via the Active Sync program and is available from the HTC Cingular 8125 page. I was running 1.8.x and the current version is now 2.25.11.1. According to Deppy, the performance on his 8125 is greatly improved with this update. My 8125 is about to get sent back to Cingular as it has not been charging for the past week and a half…even though it was plugged in to the wall AC charger during this time. Someone said that if the battery on a Cingular 8125 gets below a critical level, the only way to charge it is via the wall charger and not the USB to mini-USB cable. I don’t really buy into that theory as the ability to charge should not differ…if one can charge when the battery has 50% capacity, it should be able to charge when it has 10% capacity. I am not an electrical engineer, but I play one on tv. I don’t know what the amperage is on the USB cable connection vs. the wall adapter, but I can’t imagine the USB is delivering any less than the wall adapter. Where is that meter at?
Cingular is sending me another 8125 right now complete with a new battery. I am going to leave that son of a gun plugged in for a couple of days (the wall charger of course
) before I do anything with it.
UPDATE
This ROM update is money. If you have an 8125 then be sure to juice up your phone (HTC recommends that you have at least a 50% charge in your phone battery), and download the ~50MB file from the HTC site (link above). The phone does *everything* faster, from menu navigation, to data downloads, etc. The whole deal is much, much better. Right now I am working on forwarding all of my mail, after being filtered by GMail, to my 8125. This is how this thing is supposed to work.
Download speeds at my house (on the top of a hill in San Francisco. Translation: Bad Signal) went from ~42Kbps (5.25 KB/sec) to ~82Kbps (10.25KB/sec)! YMMV, but that is reason alone to get this thing on your 8125…unless of course you just use it as a phone. =P
UPDATE II - July 5th:
Well, looks like the 8125 ROM update fixed whatever was making this thing act up, burn up the battery and refuse to charge. I have GPRS enabled and the 8125 checking for mail every 10 minutes and it went a couple of days without needing a recharge…that would not have been possible before. If you are not running the latest firmware on this thing, I would say it is imperative for you to update your 8125. The entire unit works faster and is really like an entirely different machine after the update.

Have you had a problem with the phone disconnecting from the phone network during a call greater than 5 minutes? Ever since I flashed to the new ROM, most calls greater than 5 minutes will disconnec with a pop sound. The GPRS goes to an “X” and the phone starts searching for a phone network.
July 6th, 2006 at 3:25 pm
No, I have not had that happen. I think I have made a few 5 min+ phone calls too. I did just get the new 8125 plugged in, so I will be conducting some side-by-side trials after I let the thing charge for a couple of days.
July 7th, 2006 at 11:59 am
FYI…I routinely use mine in over 5 minute calls and it never drops. In fact, I used to drop in one area of town, but today I maintained a call through the entire area!
This rom is the shiznit!

I have had this problem. It seems to be a problem with radio version 2.17. I upgraded my ROM to a customized cooked one from XDA developers. Its the 2.25 ROM with the new 2.24 bootloader and 2.25 Radio, which seems to be much better. No more having the software reset the radio while in mid call. Also DO NOT install SPB Backup…it will also cause this problem I did a total of 5 hard resets, installed SPB Backup and everytime it messed up the radio software, so stay away from that. However it was messing it up on the 2.17 radio I have yet to try it on the 2.25 radio and I don’t think I will lol.
July 12th, 2006 at 2:15 pm
I agree with you 100%. I have not had one problem with my old 8125 since I installed the 2.25.x ROM update. Not sure what to do with the new one they sent me…I think it will be going back. Bottom line: If you are having any trouble with your 8125, I would update your unit with the new ROM ASAP.

I just installed the ROM Update and am now having trouble with my bluetooth connection. It was working perfectly with the previous ROM, but now is not recognizing my headset or in my car. Very strange. Does anyone have any clues as to how I can get that fixed? I really appreciate your help!
July 13th, 2006 at 8:51 am
Sounds like you need to re-pair your 8125 with the headset and the car. When you install the ROM update, it is basically like you have a new phone afaik.
July 21st, 2006 at 11:00 am
Thanks for the info on the ROM update!
For what it’s worth, I have the 8125, and I am unable to charge mine from the USB adapter after the battery goes dead. I have to use the wall charger when the battery goes below the critical level.
You said:
“Someone said that if the battery on a Cingular 8125 gets below a critical level, the only way to charge it is via the wall charger and not the USB to mini-USB cable. I don’t really buy into that theory as the ability to charge should not differ…”

Clay - I have the EXACT same problem as you - mid call 6 and 1/2 mins in, and POP/CLICK and the entire phone network is down for anything from 15 seconds to 3 or more minutes. Only appeared AFTER the ROM upgrade. Now if only I could understand the remedy that Omega 2008 posted.
July 26th, 2006 at 2:29 pm
Has anyone had a problem with bluetooth pairing? I had my 8125 paired with a Bluetake headset and decided to switch to a Jabra (people compained about the Bluetake sound and the earpiece was uncomfortable).
I deleted the Bluetake device from the phone and then it wouldn’t pair with the Jabra. Went back to the Bluetake and tried to pair again, the phone doesn’t see the device.
It does see my laptop however and pairs with that.
PS: Thanks for the ROM info. I’m getting that this evening.
July 29th, 2006 at 8:05 am
Looks like this isn’t a Bluetooth thread (except for Drew and I). But to tie it to the ROM update, I installed the new ROM, but the Bluetooth problem persists. To be clear, the PDA now detects my laptop, but does not detect either of two headsets I have tried with it. I think it must be a software problem - somehow the hands free protocol does not seem to want to come out and play. One of the headsets it now cannot see was detected and paired with it for months, was deleted from the setup and now cannot be re-established.

Looks like the ROM update is not for me.
August 2nd, 2006 at 11:45 am
My 8125 died during the night, and I’ve got Cingular sending a new one in the next 2 days. I’ve tried charging from the car and from the USB, but to no avail. The phone will oddly start up after pressing the power button, on occasion, then when it gets to the Windows Mobile screen, it shuts off, as if the battery is shot. When I went to the Cingular store today, they didn’t even say anything about checking the battery, but immediately gave me the Toll-free number for warranty. And, of course the first question they asked was “did you take it to a Cingular store to have ‘em check the battery? Because we won’t ship a battery with the phone.” So, while a new phone is on the way, I still plan to go back to the store and ask for a replacement battery. I got data on here I haven’t yet backed up! Ugh! Glad I checked here for more info…
August 2nd, 2006 at 12:23 pm
First new 8125 Cingular sent me had no battery, the 2nd time they sent me a full box, including battery and everything (as if I had purchased it from them new). I would get them to ok a new battery, denoted in your account, head over to a Cingular store that has one and pick it up for free, then update your ROM and see if that clears up your problems. It has seemingly fixed my 8125 which has worked flawlessly since I updated it.
August 3rd, 2006 at 6:24 am
Update: When I got home last night, I figured I’d try to charge the unit from my wall charger. Sure ’nuff, it started charging, and now it’s fully charged. I successfully updated the ROM this morning, as well. Of course, Cingular has already shipped my new phone, too, so I guess I can either send it back, or keep the new one and go through the update process with that one, too. Should I still work on getting a new battery?
August 3rd, 2006 at 10:19 am
Well, I sent two new phones right back to Cingular. The first time, a new battery fixed my issues. The second time, I had the new ROM updated before the 2nd unit arrived and things were working very well. I figured I would stay with the unit that was working. You have 14 days to return it from the time you receive it. I would see if you can get your old phone working flawlessly for a week. If you cannot, then try the new one. My 2 cents.
August 4th, 2006 at 3:48 am
Good suggestion. That’s probably what I’ll do. My new phone was waiting for me when I got home last night. Oh, and they told me the other day that they would NOT be sending another battery with the new phone, but this package does indeed have a battery in it. I may still go for another battery, then I’ll have a spare. Thanks, man!

[…] I am sure that Deppy is going to agree with me that the Cingular 8125 is pretty much the best phone/PDA out on the market today…that is after you install the most recent ROM update. I have had a large number of people make it by my personal blog to read my reviews of the 8125 as well as ask a hell of a lot of questions, namely because my first two months with the 8125 were not so hot. But, since the updted ROM was installed, it has worked flawlessly. That brings up one point I would like to make. I believe Cingular, and many other tech gadget companies, release the first generation of gadgets like this knowing that there are a lot of issues with it. I think it is only fair for HTC and/or Cingular to let the first round of consumers know this and to compensate them for this in some way. Maybe getting the unit for half of the MSRP…something. Because the hell and BS I went through after shelling out $400 for this thing nearly drove me to go postal. The only thing that really kept me from doing so were the guys that I spoke to at the PDA support group. They Fed/Ex’d me two new 8125s and were super calm and cool on the phone. As someone that I don’t speak to anymore once said, “They killed me with kindness.” […]

I wonder at what point Cingular will start shipping the 8125 with the new ROM update
August 9th, 2006 at 7:36 pm
I’ve had my Cingular 8125 for about 2 days, now I am having problems with the phone not charging. When I try to charge my phone using the wall and the USB charger, it doesn’t charge nor does the charging light come on. I’m not sure what the problem is. I was thinking maybe it was the battery, but I don’t want to spend anymore money on this phone unless I’m sure of the problems. If I replace this battery will it fix my problem? and also what can I do to my phone to keep it from happening again? If someone out the know, please help me before I throw this phone against the wall.
August 10th, 2006 at 7:37 am
Maybe update the ROM like I have said here about 5 times?
Try that, I had the same problems with my 8125 when I first recieved it, now it is all peaches and cream.
August 10th, 2006 at 8:56 am
My girlfriend and I each bought 8125’s a week or 2 ago. Mine had the 2.25.11.1 ROM installed from the factory and so far I love it. Only problem so far has been with my gmail being deleted every sync, which is gmail’s problem aparently. We bought 2gig transcend mini-sd cards from newegg and they have been great for watching movies and playing music. In the first day of having the phones we both managed to get locked out of our sim cards which required a call to the cingular store to get the unlock codes. Now they’re both set to 0000. Does that mean they can use any sim card, ie “unlocked”?
August 10th, 2006 at 9:01 am
I don’t know on the unlock code, but you can change your gmail settings to keep it rather than delete it via the settings on gmail.
August 10th, 2006 at 7:56 pm
I know that you mentioned alot about upgrading the ROM, what particular program do you suggest? I know there are quite a few out in the market. Thanks
August 14th, 2006 at 2:50 pm
I decided to upgrade my 8125 ROM last night even I have never had any battery issue with it. After the upgrade, I did notice a slight speed change. It did operate a little bit faster than before.
August 14th, 2006 at 11:10 pm
Does Cingular offer an extended warranty on the 8125 phone?
August 15th, 2006 at 10:01 am
[…] Ok, it has definitely been a while since I have published anything here. Things have been quite busy in the past few months, so please excuse me. I did want to post something that is of interest to anyone who has a Cingular 8125…you will want to check out this post about updating the ROM on your Cingular 8125. It is a lifesaver as far as I am concerned. I had many problems with my Cingular 8125 not wanting to charge. This ROM update by HTC has done wonders for my little 8125. tags: cingular, htc, pda, rom, wireless, cingular 8125 […]

Lisa, you can get Lock Line insurance for your 8125. It is $3 or $4 a month
August 15th, 2006 at 4:25 pm
I’ve read this until my eyes were sore (ok, they were tired when I started) so sorry if I missed this. I understand the word is Upgrade your ROM but
1. the link to the upgrade site didn’t work for me
2. I just got my phone one week ago. How can I be certain the newest ROM isn’t already on this device?
3. I haven’t used this enough to have to charge it yet but it looks like I’m in for a ride. With typical cell phones, I’m told it is important to let the battery cycle all the way down for at least 3 cycles. From what I’ve read, it sounds like I should never let the 8125 get below 75%.
4. Funny thing is my only issue, at least the only one I KNEW I had was that every time I pick up the device, I have to enter my pin. Every time. Including answering a phone call. I can’t find out how to turn off the unlock feature. Setings, Personal, Lock doesn’t let me uncheck the box.
August 16th, 2006 at 8:32 am
Dean, the link is updated now. You should find all of the information on there about determining what firmware version you are running. As for the battery, I am no expert, but I would not let your battery run all of the way out on this thing. I have had many problems in the past when I did. But, since I updated the firmware, I have not had my 8125 want to run that low anyway.
August 27th, 2006 at 9:43 am
Just so you know, the new 8525 will be coming out an a few months. This is a 3G version of the 8125 and will have close to DSL speeds. The best thing about cingulars data services is that if you are off the 3G towers it will work on EDGE or GPRS as well.
August 29th, 2006 at 5:05 am
love the 8125. have the 1.8.11.1 rom from 11/24/05
the only issues i’ve had are bluetooth tethering to a laptop.
can i upgrade the rom and keep ALL my contacts etc using activesync? if it works as is and i don;t have to lose that info - why upgrade?
faster performance? ayone have comparison for those 2 ROMs?
August 29th, 2006 at 7:04 am
I don’t have side-by-side numbers on speed improvements and I doubt anyone will. I agree with the adage, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” In my situation, I needed to do something as my 8125 was out of commission for 3 weeks. I have to say though, the “seat of the pants” test tells me that the new ROM allows my 8125 to run much more quickly for just about every task.

I have had my 8125 for a couple months now and have a 2g memory card with lots of songs on it and some power point presentations. The other day out of no where the phone is not reading my memory card. Does anybody have an idea why this is happening. I have the old rom version and about to download the new one. I am wondering if this will help or has nothing to do with the problem. When I sinc up the phone to my pc it doesnt read the card either. If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

I just got back from bowling and i got in my car with my 8125 in the leather carrying case. when i sat down my phone fell out of the case and while in mid air, i shut the door on it and smashed the screen. I am a college student and use this all the time. I do not have enough money to get a new one and i really need it. I have had it for like 85 days now. I was wondering if it was possible that cingular would give me a new one. Especially since if i just carried it around in my pocket and not use the case they supplied, this accident probobly wouldnt of happaned. Can someone respond quickly because i have like 5 days to get an opinion on how i can get another phone. Thank you

I have tried everything I can think of but cannot get my 8125 to sync via bluetooth. I keep getting the message “Cannot find an existing Bluetooth partnership with a PC that supports Actvesync.” I’ve followed the prompts to set up a partnership but the only option that is offered is a serial port connection not Activesync. Activesync 4.2 is installed an works fine via cable.
Can someone help ? Thanks.

8125 not Syncing/ PC says device not detected/Phone is OFF and dial keypad is missing
——————————————————————————–
Hello,
After I upgraded my ROM. I am having problems using Active Sync. It won’t detect the device when I connected the USB cable. I tried soft reset, hard reset, remove, reinstall active sync and reboot the PC, also used two different computers and it still doesn’t work.
I also notice that my dialing keypad won’t show up when i press the “call button”. Comm Manager shows that my phone is off. Tried turning it on by tapping as well as holding the Comm button then tap..doesn’t work either..
Please help! I am thinking of downgrading the ROM to 1.8 to see if the phone will work but i cannot get the Active Sync to work..
Someone said about me needing SD image of ROM. Will this work? where can I get this? HELP PLEASE!
Need help from anyone. Thanks.

Almost all computer USB ports deliver a maximum of 500 mA, and if you use any unpowered hubs you may not even get that much power. The wall adapter provides 1000 mA (1 A).
October 6th, 2006 at 4:29 pm
I have a question about whether or not you need to unlock the phone to do the ROM upgrade. I’m still on 1.8 and want to upgrade to the 2.25 that is currently on HTC America’s website. How do you do a complete back up? So far I’ve backed up my contacts, ringtones, pictures, notes and any additional documents I added. What else am I missing? Is there a way to back up things such as voice tags and certain preferences that I have set already? I have been to many forums and any advice is much appreciated. I’m getting quite confused and this one seems straight forward.

Patrick, I just updated the link. HTC redesigned their site, but the silly little web designers don’t know anything about redirects apparently.

I want to install the update, but don’t want to mess up my Bluetooth communications with my headset. Right now it is working just fine.

Didn’t “hose” anything for me. Just made everything work better…like charging.

Hello,
my cingular 8125 would not turn on and would not charge. I now understand that it maybe because the battery reached critical level. The device would not charge and would not start. The led comes on when I plug the device to the cr charger, but would not turn on. How can I install the upgrade if I cannot turn on the device?
January 12th, 2007 at 5:52 pm
I took mine to my Cingular business center with a dead, unchargable battery. He said that I had a Motorala charger and even though it fit the connector, it was likely the problem. He plugged his charger into my phone and it started charging. He swapped chargers for free.
January 17th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
Bob Said “He said that I had a Motorala charger and even though it fit the connector, it was likely the problem. He plugged his charger into my phone and it started charging. ”
Motorola charger, charges at the spec 500ma, the HTC charger goes up to 1 amp.

Different subject… My 8125 has been working nearly flawlessly for 7 months or so. Just recently I have had some strange problems where when I turn it on, I get a series of vibrations and “Cingular” tunes played. The phone is basically useless until this stops which seems to take 5 or so cycles. Once it stops its madness it works fine again. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I´ve just bought a cingular 8125 and it´s not charging. I tried Jeff’s trick and the phone turned on, but the battery is still not charging.
The ROM current version is 2.25.11.1. It became installed.
When I try Jeff’s trick, i can charge the battery, but when i disconnect it from the wall or usb, the battery doens’t last for more than 15 minutes…
Can anybody help me?

I just bought the 8125 and have the older verison installed on the unit. My phone is originally cingular but its an unlocked unit because when i travel outside the USA i swap chips to work with other carriers. My question is, if I download the new version 2.25.11.1. will this lock the phone again or interferere with swaping carriers? Thanks.

Hello,
I bought 8125 about 3,5 monthes ago and I have a small problem with it. I like to send messages a lot but I still don’t know how switch on the delivery report. It says “…before sending the message, tap Menu> Tools> Options. Tap Text Messages and select Request delivery notifications”! When I’m writing a new message before sending I tap Menu, but there is no Tools!!! Just only Add recipient, My text, Spell Check, Check Names, Save to Drafts, Cancel Message and there are Insert and Message Options (but there are grey and I cannot use it)!!! Do you have any ideas what to do? Thank you

Has anyone had any problems with their IR connections since installing the 2.25 ROM update? After updating, I’ve been unable to use my IR port. Sadly, I use it frequently in my Real Estate practice and can’t afford to be without it.
Cingular support and HTC tell me over the phone it sounds like a hardware problem, but it worked when I had the 1.8.11. I’d like to try to find that old version just to prove/disprove the hardware theroy before I have to throw down another $400 for a new device.
If anyone knows where I can find it, email me at bnjweston_AT_hotmail.com.
Thanks,
Bob

Since I did the ROM update speed seems to have decreased, rather than increased. I takes longer to update the calendar, longer to delete messages, longer to open menus…I’ve had it for about a year but I doubt age should be an issue at this point.
April 13th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
My 8125 battery died totally and I followed some advice on here to use the wall charger that the device came with; it worked like a charm! Thanks!
My only issue with the phone is that it fairly often freezes on me - the worst is when I’m trying to end a call! It seems more like a software issue (thanks microsoft) than anything else. However, something similar happens on my fiance’s L2 - a cingular problem? Perhaps just crappy software all around..

In response to David Kennedy, if you haven’t already perhaps yoou should check and make sure you haven’t accidentaly programmed any alarms and or calander events, this is something that could efiniteky be causing your problem. I realize you’ve most likely checked this, simply a suggestion, J.C.

Actually, you are wrong about the battery issue. With electronics devices, and even their power supplies/chargers, etc. getting “smart” these days. If I let the battery in my 8125 drain below 10% or so, it will NOT charge with anything but the OEM charger that came with the phone. No other chargers work, car charger, iGo(for home or car charger), and NO aftermarket chargers will work, so it’s something keyed electronically with the factory charger, go figure. P.S. - I have seen this happen with Motorola Razrs on occasion too.

I bought a refubishd Cingular 8125. It’s worked fine for about 2 months now until a few days ago. All the sudden it started locking up after a few minutes.
It’s to the point now where the battery is completely drained. If I try and charge it via USB or the wall charger I can get it turned on sometimes but it will lock up after a few seconds in windows. Then it will usually reset itself and the screen will go just go dark.
I tried switching to a fully charged battery from my roommate’s 8125 but I get the same problems.

i bought a Cingular htc 8125 about 2 week earlier from ebay, USA. i never able to turn on the set. the seller inform me that at the time of it’s shipment the set works just fine.actually the problem is the phone not charging. When I try to charge my phone using the wall and the USB charger, it doesn’t charge nor does the charging light come on. I’m not sure what the problem is. i have measured the output rating of the charger and finds ok. is the problem in the battery?caz the seller charged it fully before it’s shipment. i spend a lot but disappointed. can any one show me any hope…..

It’s very likely that the battery is dead. Cingular sometimes has these in their store locations and might be willing to let you try one to power it up.

The Cingular 8125 has some major issues with the battery. After owning the device 2 days shy of a year…my phone went from full battery to dead in 20 minutes. My phone stays plugged into the wall 18 hours/day…so there is no reason for the failure. After it went dead, the device goes to the Cingular screen & cannot load the home screen. Just goes from dead to Cingular screen to off. After they sent a replacement, I could make phone calls only if the phone was plugged in. Now, a week later…the same that happened with the old phone has happened & I cannot even use it. Their customer service sux. Why should I pay for a problem they won’t acknowledge?

Has anyone had trouble with the sim card? I have a message on my window that reads “invalid or missing sim card”. I just got it last month. It worked fine until yesterday. Customer service says everything is fine on their end. I have yet to talk to technical support as I was on hold about 15 minutes and had to hang up to attend to my chindren.

I noticed that battery issue on my 8125, when it dies like that you can actually take the battery out, plug into wall adapter and then turn phone on. Once it boots up, replace the battery and it will start charging again.

When I pair my phone with the comp, thru bluetooth, it sets my phone time back an hour. So say it’s 6, when I link the phone and comp, the comp says 6 and my phone will then say 5. I have to change the time every time I link the two. I have rom 2.25.11.102 date 5/11/06. some one told me it was a update issue. I haven’t found a more recent rom update. ??????? HELP
