Cingular 8125 Bluetooth Dial-Up WAP Internet Connection Settings

Ok, sorry for the crazy title. I have had a whole slew of people ask me how to get their Cingular 8125 connected to their laptop via a Bluetooth Dial-Up connection, so here is how you do it.

First you are going to need to make sure that you have connected your computer and your Cingular 8125 together via a Bluetooth connection. I trust that most of you out there with an 8125 can pull this off. For those of you who cannot, the basic steps are to make your computer and/or your Cingular 8125 “discoverable” in your Bluetooth Control Panel (computer) or Bluetooth Settings (connection manager -> Bluetooth Settings). Once you get them connected, go into the “Bluetooth Devices” Control Panel on your computer…you are probably already in here if you are just setting things up. Make sure that you see Dial-Up Networking (DUN) in the “Services” tab for the Properties of your Bluetooth Device (aka Cingular 8125). Click the Properties button for the Cingular 8125 then select the Services tab. You should see it in there, if you don’t then you need to set your deal up correctly…it should be there.

Now on to the connection settings:

The following is how you set up your computer to connect, via Bluetooth, to the internet via your Cingular 8125. This is not officially condoned by Cingular as far as I know….or by me, but I am not official. So, have a day:

  1. First you are going to need to setup a Bluetooth connection between your phone and computer. I just finished explaining this right? So, make sure your computer and Cingular 8125 are paired via Bluetooth.
  2. Add a new Dial Up Networking (DUN) connection by going to the Start Menu and then right click (use the right mouse button) on My Network Places and then select Preferences.
  3. Click the “Create New Connection” link at the top of the left navigation bar. A wizard will pop up. Click the Next button and then select the Connect to Internet and then click the Next button again. Select “Set Up My Connection Manually” and then click next. Select “Connect Using a Dial-Up Modem”.
  4. The next window that pops up will show you the modems that are connected to your computer. If you do not see something like “Standard Modem Over Bluetooth Connection” listed there (or however you have connected your phone to the computer), then you will need to go back and get your phone talking to your computer. Select the correct (if you have multiple) modem connection over Bluetooth and click next.
  5. Type Cingular 8125, or whatever you would like to name this connection on your computer, in the box and click Next.
  6. Type *99# as the phone number.
  7. Here is the information to type in the next boxes:
    user name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
    password: CINGULAR1

Select the box about using the connection for anyone that uses your computer (unless you don’t want to) and uncheck the second (unless this is your only or default connection).

That is how you do it. I just tested this out on my Windows XP box and Cingular 8125 and everything connected fine. I am sure some of you will have questions, please just make sure you have double checked all of the settings and procedures above before asking. Cheers.

  5. Jason Golod Says:

Mutio, yes. Take a look at my Cingular WAP dial-up settings post. You should be able to get things going from there. Just make sure that you pair your computer and your phone. Then the rest is pretty easy.

I hope that you can help me with this and thank you for your time.

what speeds are you guys connecting at (in kbps)?

  15. kbmoose2 Says:

I was succesful in seeting up a modem link by tethering my 8125 with the USB cable. The only problem is that even though my computer shows a connection of 10mbps, I am unable to use that connection. None of my “internet fueled” programs will recognize the connection. For example, IE says, “Page cannot be displayed” and AIM says, “Server unavailable.”

    Any ideas? References? Help?

    Hey,

Is anyone out there using the 3400 with multiple BT connections? - i.e. we have a pda we’d like to connect for GPS, and the phone as well. I’ve been told the 3400 may or may not support multiple connections, and that previous models didn’t?

  18. KAUNG Says:

I’ve been trying with USB connection to my laptop with cingular 8125…so far..i can’t make it work.. it said NO DIAL TONE!!! anybody know why? i’ve been using step by step instruction from this blog…somebody help me. thanks

  19. Carlos Says:

    Hey Kuang,
make sure htc modem is selected and not the default modem. If you go to your network connections and right click the connection you created, whatever you called it,and go to properties, I dont remember what tab it was (not by my computer right now) you need to make sure htc modem is checked. Anyway that was a problem I had. Goodl uck.

This is sweet. I have the 8525, which I set up with your instructions with one mod. I am using the Logitech bluetooth adaptor that comes with the de Novo keyboard and mouse. It installs a bunch of bluetooth drivers and tools which make it very easy to setup.

I used the login/pass of WAP@CINGULAR.COM (for both). I am connecting at 115.2kbps. I will do some testing to see if this is real. I am in El Dorado Hills Ca. We have the new Cingualr “high speed” network. This is something faster that EDGE.

  21. Kyle Says:

    I am totally digging this.
I was connecting via Dial-Up at around 38kbps - but now I’m hitting 230kbps. Nice. I can finally watch videos!
(I’m using the USB cable btw)

  22. Luke Howell Says:

    Kyle,
How did you set it up to use the USB cable?

  23. Philip Says:

Thank you thank you for the info. HTC and AT&T kept telling me it wouldn’t work, but I knew it could after I resolved my XP p.o.s. issues. Connected immediately after entering the info you provided. Problem solved. Thanks!!!!!!!

  24. Ruth Radin Says:

My daughter recently signed up for Cingular phone service. Her phone is a sony ericsson W810i. Coincidently she has a wireless mac laptop. After a few weeks she checked her bill online and was hoorified and shocked to see that it was $2500. It seems that her bluetooth connection in her phone “found” her bluetooth connection in her laptop and hooked up without her knowledge. Even after folloing the procedure to turn off the connection, it continued to do it until Cingular cut off her service. They are demanding that she pay $1500 of the $2500 and she feels that she shouldn’t be penalized for something that she did not ask for and did not initiate. When she first talked to Cingular, Tech support apologized and told her that all charges would be removed. Since the, although she has called Cingular at least weekly, they will not let her talk to Tech Support, will not accept responsibility for the glitch in the system and are now calling her a liar and insist that the internet use is “legitimate”. She did not sign up for internet access as she has Qwest service for unlimited internet access for $90/month, did not want internet access through her cell phone and hasn’t even deliberately used the cell to check email. What can be done? She does not make enough money to pay off this kind of debt and does not want it to go on her credit report. Help!

  25. Jeffrey Says:

    Ruth:
Just keep calling and trying until you get someone receptive, and keep asking for a supervisor. Tell them it is their responsibility since it is a malfunction within their product. If that doesn’t work, go into the store and try the face to face approach. If that still doesn’t work, higher a lawyer.

Also, if anyone uses an HP Ipaq HW 6945, these instructions work great, but before you can connect you have to press the red button five or six times to close any existing connections. Don’t enter anything for the Init String either (you shouldn’t have if you were following THESE instructions anyway.)

  26. dr Says:

Per the rep @ AT&T this connection will not be billed… it only goes against your cell minutes…you can also connect using nothing in the user and pw boxes but the connection will not be as fast. It shows me currently at 921kbps which is tons faster then my normal dial up of 21.6kbps. Just got limit my use to nights n weekend so I not to use minutes up and go over the plan and get billed out the butt….

  27. Manoj Says:

    Hi,

I followed the setup and was successful in pairing up the 8125 with my laptop via Bluetooth. However when I try and connect to internet using the dial-up, it complains of ‘No Dial’ tone error message. I tried debugging all I know about but with no success.

    Anyone got this working?

  28. sally Says:
