LaserJet 4000 Paper Trays and Accessories
I just had one of those moments where you think eBay could be the coolest thing ever to happen to this world. What I purchased is not necessarlity earth shattering, but the whole experience was so good that I want to recommend someone to call if you are looking for used LaserJet 4000 printers, C4124A add-on paper trays, or other accessories. I am doing quite a bit of printing again and much of it happens on legal as well as letter paper. The documents are usually big enough that swapping the paper out for a different size makes sense. I thought I remembered that my LaserJet 4000 workhorse laser printer, was capable of having an additional tray or two added on to it pretty easily. So, I started to poke around one day last week and found out that the tray I was looking for was the model C4124A. This works on a few different models that are essentially built on the LaserJet 4000 chasis.
The only thing I could really not find was if this was all that I needed to add on an additional 500 sheet tray. I decided to look on ebay to see what I could find and there was one there for $35. I noticed that the seller also had lots of 7 to 10 laserjet 4000s for sale for under $100 each. Granted these things could have 300 to 500 thousand pages that have run through them (these are rated at 40k pages a month duty cycle), but that still sounds cheap to me. So, I fired off an email to the seller to ask him if this tray was all I needed to add on a tray so that I can have a dedicated tray of legal paper for my LaserJet 4000. He replied in a few minutes and I sealed the deal for $62 out the door, shipped. He called me about a half an hour later to get my credit card info (I hate to use PayPal more than I have to) and we chatted for a few minutes. This guy knows these printers. I got off the phone feeling pretty stoked that 1) I got exactly what I needed without having to call HP and do a bunch of research 2) spent $62 to get the tray and have it delivered 3) that I was not going to have to swap paper anymore.
Well, the box just showed up from FedEx Ground. He packed it in enough bubble wrap that it could survive a nuclear bomb blast. Bottom line is, if you are in need of a used LaserJet 4000 or you want to get a paper tray or other accessory, give Larry Lancaster a holler.

The HP 4000 printer is a solid workhorse. Sometimes getting a used one on ebay is a risk since they can have incredibly high page counts, but I’d say in general, they are very good printers and didn’t make my “top 10 worst laserjet problems” on my blog. The only issue I’ve found with those is that sometimes the tray rollers can cause some problems with paper pickup, but it’s a quick fix. I’ve also seen those printers with well over a million pages printed on them.
