Do you DoFollow?

The first time I heard about this “dofollow” plugin for Wordpress, I thought, wow that could really turn up the heat from comment spammers, But, then I thought about it and realized that it is a great idea and for a number of reasons.

  1. First, most applications don’t get really good until people lean on them for a while. Blogging platforms like Wordpress have had a lot of comment spammers attacking them for a while now. I use SpamKarma, and have for years, to combat spam comments. While it is not 100% accurate, it does a good enough job for me. Opening up the link love at this point, will probably help to make Wordpress and anti-spam plugins even more solid in the future.
  2. Having links to “things” on the web are what help the search engines figure out what they should return. More links with more descriptive anchor text will probably help that in addition to all of the link love lovers out there spamming it up by hand.
  3. Plus, you only live once. WTF.

I just came across a really great dofollow plugin that takes things a step further. Many of you are probably thinking that you don’t want to just give up the goods on your first date, right? Well, enter Lucia’s Linky Love plugin for human spammers. That is right folks, you can control when you give up the goods and it all takes place behind the scenes. Want to wait until the 4th time someone posts a comment? Done Jackie. It definitely deserves some linky love.

Hey Jason, I am a do follow blog. I find that moderating comments is the best way for me to avoid spam.

The past few weeks I noticed three different sites pop up that are basically a list of do follow sites. From these sites I have received comments. When I check to see who left the comment, like I did with you, the site isn’t spam necessarily - it’s a site that sells autoparts, etc.

The sites often are the type you cannot leave a comment on. I believe the sites are legitimate but have hired someone to go leave comments on all the do follow blogs to build links. Well, I mark them as spam because I can see through what they are doing:)

More links with descriptive text is good. But how descriptive should a field called “Name (required)” be without leaving the blog owner feeling their generosity is being abused?

I ‘do-follow’ on my blogs, too. (I do need to check my new blogs, though.) I have to check all the comments, anyway - and I love to share link love with fellow bloggers!

    And Lucia’s plug-in’s just rock!

This site isn’t a dofollow. All the comments look to be nofollow

  7. Jason (108 comments.) Says:

Actually, it is a no-follow site…with terms. You have to post a certain number of comments before you get the goods. Check out my name….not nofollow.

Its a nice concept, but it also leads to increased ’spam’ with comments like ‘Good Job’ or ‘Nice blog’ that are not actually relevant to the post, but are just there because the poster saw a ‘DoFollow’ badge on the blog and wanted a backlink.

I suppose you could call this a double edged sword, it’d definitely get your more comments, but also increase your moderation work.

BlueRogX - comment moderation is unfortunatey part of owning / operating a blog. Even with heavy spam levels, it’s only a few minutes per day of work, most of which can be done from a Treo / smartphone type device on the go. No need to login every 5 minutes to check for spam.

    Hi Jason,

I have a do follow blog and I just moderate the comments. It only takes me a few minutes to toss out the junk anyway so I figure why punish the cool readers?

Isn’t it amazing that there is always someone out there looking to be a pain in the…but! Whether you’re online or at the work place, or in traffic there is always some one out there just to make your day a little harder.
I think all your points are valid ones and I find it interesting how you look at it with a “birdseye view” perspective.
