I just logged into my Adsense account and noticed a new message saying my account has been chosen for the new Adsense Referrals 2.0 (yes, there are two r’s in referrals) Beta. Basically, it looks like Google is getting into the CPA game now. So, let’s see, they are in the CPC game, the CPM game, newspaper, radio, video ads…what is next? Are they tapped on the new revenue models?

Taking a peek at some of their offers, it looks like they are a bit light in the payouts. For example, their ringtone offers pay around $10, while the same offers can be found on other networks like Azoogle Ads that pay $13. I am sure the convenience factor will cause many to simply use Google’s Adsense Referral product rather than re-invent the wheel and complicate things. Of course, you don’t get something for nothing.

I am sure there is going to be some yahoo that reads this and gets pissed that I even used a title like that, but what they heck. Based on my experiences in life it certainly seems to me that there is a large percentage (more than a majority) of people in this beautiful country of ours, that like to live beyond their means. Personal savings rates in the US are currently below 0%…good job team. Alone, this stat doesn’t really show much other than people in the US, as a whole, don’t like to sock a lot of liquid assets away.

I am all for bet big, win big, but I think it definitely makes sense to have something to fall back on before you do so. It seems that too many people have used this mindset to bet big and have nothing if they make the wrong bet. I was just reading SEO Blackhat’s post about a Single Point of Failure (which is typically used in the tech world) when it comes to income and making a living online. Most people in the traditional world can’t fathom how people make money on the internet. That is fine by me, I don’t have the time to try and explain it to them anymore. But, I think that most of us that make money online understand that we don’t have the silly little rules and laws to “protect” us in the event someone shuts off one of our revenue streams. In the B&M (brick and mortar) world, if you get fired and they tell you it is for A and it was because of B (and you can prove it) you can sue them and make money. In the online world, if Google shuts off your Adsense account, you are F’ed and you have zero recourse.

To get back on point I have found over the years that most of the people I admire most in business are not only smart and cunning, but they are pretty frugal as well. The “American Way” I am describing is to spend more than you take in. For whatever reason, people think that if they get one big payday, there are surely more right behind it. The smart people save and then re-invest in a proven winner…or at least make sure they are smart about how much of their capital they spend in relation to how much they have and/or bring in. I remember Shawn Hogan (of DigitalPoint) telling someone to live well within their means one time and I have always remembered that for some reason. I had heard rumors at the time about how much money he was making (and have since heard more of the same from a pretty reliable source) and thought that he was a pretty together and smart guy for making a statement like that. Surely, I thought, that was one of the reasons he was so successful online and at the bank.

I think it has become increasingly difficult for people to keep up with the Jones’. Places like my old hometown of San Diego are littered with Bentley coupes and other exotic cars. I am pretty confident that while there have been many fortunes created this last boom cycle, much of this is fool’s gold. There are many people who find it more important to put up a picture of what they want people to see them as rather than what they are. We are all guilty of this to some extent. But, when you bet your financial future and viability on it, you are playing with fire.

But, we know that what people say and what people do are usually two different things, right? So, I was trying to figure out what the best MCE MPEG-2 decoder setup was, because my MCE boxes keep dying when I play DVDs. The Green Button forums were down and I came across another MCE forum called XPMCE.com. I immediately noticed a square Adsense box on the left…but, it had 0 posts listed next to it. Wow, this could be one of the best Adsense image implementations I have ever seen. Click on the thumbnail, to check out the big boy image.

Well, I am sure this is going to get the award for CYA in 2006. Google has decided to state publicly that lining up images with your Adsense ads is a no-no. Well, hardy har har. I am sure they are going to run out and ban people all over the place…because I am sure that the number of publishers that are using images next to their adsense ads is in the double digits (to be conservative). Plus, making an announcement, rather posting this on the Adsense blog that very few people read, at this time of year is pretty comical as well.

Happy Holidays!!

Looks like Google is trying out a new lime green adsense background on their search results page for the top sponsored links. I actually like it quite a bit. It stands out, but is not too in your face. I am sure they are going to see a pretty nice bump in click throughs for a while until people get used to the new color and start to ignore them again.

I laugh just about every day when I see the crap that is all over the web these days. I am not going to lie, I have some of that crap out there, but my crap is pretty nice. There is some really crappy crap out there that simply has no place in a search engine’s index. I laugh because I try to figure out if the Google guys knew that once they made it super easy for webmasters to make a bunch of money with Adsense, they were going to be completely inundated with spam pages and websites…and I think they did. It is human nature really, we are greedy bastards. If we see a way to make money, we see how far we can take it, even if that means breaking someone’s rules somewhere. It all makes sense really. Hats off to L&S.

I remember the first time I heard the word Google. I was in New York, heading out to my parent’s house on Fire Island…yeah, you know, where all of the gay people are. Anyway, a friend of mine was talking to someone else and he mentioned Google. At the time I was running a few, ecommerce / retail sites that were making a nice hunk of change. He asked me if I use Google for all of my searches and I told him that I didn’t even know what it was. Clearly, I was a little lazy in keeping up on my technology. But, at that time, there were so many companies with names like Google, it was a joke. But, I digress.

In the midst of this major shakeup in the Google SERPs, I figured I would spend a little time today to see what other people were saying at DigitalPoint and Webmaster World about this seemingly never ending shuffle / update / algo change / insert your term here. I have seen our Adsense revenues just get pummeled in the past week or two and it is giving me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. I can’t seem to make any sense out of it as it is affecting sites on just about every level.

I was talking to a buddy, today when the light bulb came on. This is total conspiracy theory, but what if all of this work was to build the world’s biggest ad server? Google collects all kinds of crazy data. Logging into one of my Google Sitemaps accounts (yeah I have more than one, nener nener nener) shows me what terms a site shows up for, what the average position is, and what terms generate the most clicks. We also know they collect this same type of data for Adwords and I am going to go out on a limb here and say that they most likely have the same data, or more, for Adsense…call me crazy. So, maybe this is just their way of building the biggest ad server that man has ever seen. Maybe we publishers are being used more than we ever thought. They know what sites generate the best CTR for a particular term, what ads work best in what page positions on what sites for a particular topic, they know it all. I think we are all kidding ourselves if we don’t think this is going on at some level right now at the “Googleplex” (what a gay name).

It will be great when they are running their own “free” WiFi network here in the Bay Area…then they will know all of this stuff, but also know where you live, how long your computer is left on, how many hours a day you spend on the WWW, how many IM messages you send, etc, etc, etc. People were afraid of big bad Ma Bell, she is baby shit (thanks Sheriff) compared to what Google has and will have in the months to come.

In closing, I would like to thank Google for the awesome wedding gift. I have enough crap to deal with in the next week and a half.

Ok, I have to say that I think Graywolf is probably one of the best SEO/Webmaster/Marketing bloggers or writers on the internet today. I have a few “how-to” posts that I have been working on, but can’t seem to find the time to finish. Graywolf has been pumping out some of the best content I have seen in a long time…and he just keeps on going. The last two days, he has been talking about Adsense Arbitrage which basically means you buy traffic at one price and try and convert them to an offer that pays more than you paid for the traffic. If you are good, you can make money doing this. The 2nd installment in Graywolf’s Arbitrage series is all about using standard deviation to help select the terms you want to bid on. Good stuff. Good stuff I say.
