It has been so long since my last upgrade…I was still running the 1.5 branch which I guess is pretty old school these days. It is going to take a fewcdays to get everything updated and figure out how to get some of the old features working again…so stay tuned.

Yes, I did write this on my iPhone.

So, I have been hesitant to continue to upgrade Wordpress on this site whenever a new release is out for a number of reasons. I have hacked up a number of the native functions and add-on plugins and since I am such a rookie, I have not made a log of what I have done. This is probably why I will just start from scratch, import the posts over to a clean install and build from there. Probably the biggest reason for moving over to 2.3 is native support for Tags. I think tagging is something that every type of media (audio, video, still image, etc) should have support for. Indexing becomes much easier and people are becoming more accustomed to using tags every day because of services like Delicious, Amazon and dare I say Technorati. I was just reading a great introduction to Wordpress 2.3 and I the first thing I thought of when I read about tag support was the demise of Technorati. I think Technorati is a good idea on paper, but I think it is a poor execution. I don’t really have any mind blowing ideas on how it could be done better, but one thing is for sure, I don’t like them. Maybe it is because every link on their site has nofollow on it and has for as long as I can remember. Yeah, actually that is it. Screw you Melon is what I say. Let them go down in a blaze of glory when everyone upgrades to Wordpress 2.3 and links to their own pages with their tags rather than to technostingy.

Anyway, version 2.3 is supposed to be released today, and I will be putting together a new install to check it out and set things up. Apparently there are some issues with the awesome Google Sitemaps plugin that I have been using since its inception. I will wait until that issue is fixed before I make the new install live.

To follow up on my Google trusted host idea, it looks like that it is not necessary to have “at least one link pointing to your site” as it used to be, to get a website into the Google index. I launched a new subdomain on the golod.com domain that has a Wordpress blog on it. I have posted a few items on it and sure enough, it was indexed in Google soon after. For the first few days, it was only the / page, but now it is showing multiple pages and posts. Maybe they just really like me.

UPDATE 8/21/06:
Well, it looks like the big G man has a little catch can. Now the sub-domain in question is not showing any pages indexed in google or anything in their cache. Sometimes the results have been different using the cache: and site: operators. Looks like it is time to put up a link or two.

Well, I am not sure what any of this means, but I put up a new subdomain on golod.com over the weekend…actually on Friday afternoon around 5pm. The new site was indexed in Google after I posted one blog post and later put a link on the golod.com blogroll. I checked to see if it was indexed yesterday (Sunday) and sure enough it was. There is no Adsense on the subdomain, and I simply pinged pingomatic using the stock Wordpress ping setup. So, I guess I will have to see what happens if I do the same thing without a link in the blogroll here and how that translates into the sub-domain getting indexed.

I have been working on a couple of projects lately and they have been taking up all of my time…which is a good thing. However, something that I have wanted to do for a while is to create a few, topic-based blogs, that have a number of knowledgeable contributors providing the content. I know a few people in different industries that I think would be very good and willing to contribute an article or two a week to a topic-based blog like this. One of the side-benefits of creating a multi-author blog is that you might gain acceptance into Google News. I am not going to lie, getting into Google News is one of the long-term goals…kind of a reward and measuring stick for the project. So, in an effort to facilitate our long-term objectives, I have read up a bit on what it takes to get into Google News. Barry Schwartz notes that URL structure is very important if you want your blog or website to gain admittance into Google News. So, I figured I would post an easy way to setup Wordpress so that the URLs are all honkey dorey (is that how you spell that?).

Make sure you can use the Permalinks functionality of Wordpress by having an .htaccess file in your document root that Wordpress can write to. I do this by making an .htaccess file, chmod’ing it to a+w or 666.

Update the Permalink structure in the Wordpress Dashboard. Options -> Permalinks

Set the structure to something like /news/%post_id%.html

You don’t have to use “news” in there, but I did it for show. I also added on a .html extension for fun and to make things a little more “normal” looking to the human eye. People are used to seeing .html on the end of URIs, so give the people what they want.

Ok, so it is no secret that I am a big fan of Wordpress blogs. I started using Blogger.com blogs, but have since seen the light and moved many blogs over to WordPress or left them in the posting dust. I have converted a few over using the existing Blogger Import tools that WordPress had built in. But, WordPress 2.0, which was recently released, takes importing Blogger blog posts and comments to a whole new level. Now, you have absolutely no reason not to dump Blogger and step up to the big leagues.

WordPress 2.0 comes with a wizard, available inside your WP dashboard, that will allow you to log into your Blogger.com dash, select a blog and import the posts and comments with the click of a button. It is as easy as pie. No offense to Blogger users, it is just that WordPress is so much more flexible and robust, that if you actually blog on a regular basis, I think you are missing out by using Blogger.
