Just read an interesting article over at Investor’s Business Daily about Cingular playing the catch-up game with rivals Verizon and Sprint Wireless. Verizon and Sprint have launched their own 3G networks in most major cities and based it on EV-DO technology. This translates into average speeds of between 400-700kbps. Cingular, however, has been struggling to keep pace. They have announced that they have upgraded certain markets (Seattle, Phoenix and Dallas), to their planned HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) network. HSDPA promises to bring similar 400-700kbps speeds to Cingular customers at some point over the next year. But, that is a long time to wait for something that may or may not prove to work as well as Verizon’s EV-DO network. And, unless Cingular gets their upgrades going now or plans on giving the service away at a big discount to Verizon or Sprint’s, I think they will have a ver tough time pulling customers away from the likes of Verizon. Hurry up Cingular, you guys are seriously lagging. I am about to jump ship myself.
