Montepulciano
Montepulciano is probably the town I would choose to live in if I had to pick one in Italy. It is a small hill town in the southern part of Tuscany. Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and fields of local grain, Montepulciano is the shining star at the top of the hill. We stayed at a wonderful hotel called Villa Poggiano located a few hundred meters from the edge of the town of Montepulciano and the Basilica San Biagio.
Pictures of Montepulciano
Most people want to see how a place looks before they plan on visiting. I am pretty sure that one look at the incredibly beautiful countryside of Montepulciano and you will be hooked. You can see my pictures of Montepulciano on this site.

Villa Poggiano
Villa Poggiano is a 17th century mansion that was converted for its current use by Savini family and is run by Stefania Savini and her monther. This place is such a perfect spot to base operations from in Tuscany or just relax and soak up the Tuscan countryside. The original villa on the property houses four suites upstairs (one of which I have walked through) and two larger suites downstairs. There are also four separate suites located on the rear of the property which overlook the Tuscan countryside (where we stayed). All of the rooms are decorated with beautiful antique furnishings and the bathrooms are all very well appointed (ours was particularly large). We stayed in room #9, which is located in one of the rear buildings on the upper floor. The room was really great for us and anyone that I know.
A separate living room with a desk, couch, settee (is that how you spell it?), minibar (hidden inside an antique “television stand”) and a television. The bedroom has a large antique armoir, dresser, mirror and king size bed. The bathroom was huge and had a very large sink, a toilet, bidet (seemed to be stock in all of the hotel bathrooms), and shower. There was enough room in the bathroom for about 25 to 30 people to stand in. The windows open to look over olive trees, planted on the property, and the Tuscan countryside. A great place to gaze at the sunset. There are a few new buildings under construction behind our building, where there are four more suites going in, a breakfast room and sub-terranean parking for these suites.
They had the walls and roofs completed on these before we were there, so I would assume that they may be ready for occupancy for the 2007 season. FYI, there was no construction being conducted while we stayed there, I just poked around and took a look at what they had done and spoke to Stefania about what they are putting back there. Currently, the continental type breakfast that is served every morning is served in the large living room of the villa. This area will be converted to more of a library with a couple of computers with internet access when the new breakfast area is completed in the buildings under construction. The new buildings appear to be constructed to look identical to the current buildings on the property leaving the warm Tuscan feel of the property intact.
Villa Poggiano Amenities
Villa Poggiano offers all of their guests a continental type breakfast in the morning which includes local meats and cheeses, hard boiled eggs, cereals and milk, fresh juices, danishes and coffee, espresso or cappucinos. The cappucinos are quite nice. There is also an incredible travertine swimming pool surrounded with sculptures, cypress trees and green lawn. We did not use the pool, but it would be a great place to sit and read a book and/or cool off on a hot Tuscan day.
